On the Road with Polly: Churning Butter and Bottling Buttermilk at Kriemhild Dairy Farms

Kriemhild Creamery (pronounced CREAM-hild) produces everything right here in Central New York. The cows are grass-fed and milked in nearby farms, and the milk is pasteurized, processed, bottled, and churned into butter on site.

I also took advantage of the holiday package ($49, or $59 in a gift box) that includes a little of everything on the farm:

  • 2lb Meadow Butter (salted or unsalted)
  • 1Qt Real Buttermilk with cultures
  • 1/2 Gal Kriemhild Chocolate Milk
  • 8oz Creme Fraiche
  • 1 packet of Halliday Spice Mix

And let me tell you, their chocolate milk is the BEST I’ve ever had! Its rich flavor is like drinking a chocolate bar. I’ve been daydreaming about dunking chicken in that buttermilk, too, and I can only imagine how many holiday meals will taste fresher and richer because of Kriemhild’s small batch care.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how they get it all done:

Kriemhild Creamery (1093 State Route 12B, Hamilton, NY) is the family-owned agribusiness of Bruce and Nancy Rivington, who also operate the nearby Red Gate Farm. The Rivingtons believe that Central New York provides the perfect climate for both pastures and their cows and that pasture-raised cows thrive and produce better products.

So the creamery’s milk comes from about 300 cows from Red Gate Farm and these farms in Earlville, New York:

  • Windy Knoll Farm
  • Miller Family Dairy
  • Byler Farm
  • Stone Mill Dairy

You can taste the difference for yourself, too. The Kriemhild Kupboard has all their products in stock and ready for you to pick up in Hamilton, New York, or they can ship most products, except milk, from their online store. You also can look online here to see which grocery locations near you carry their products.

If you do visit Kriemhild Creamery and Kriemhild Kupboard, be sure to check out their museum showcasing how butter churns have evolved over the years. It really shows how far we’ve come!

We’re showcasing Kriemhild Creamery as part of the Buy Madison County initiative, so whether you’re shopping for high-quality dairy products or fresh milk, vegetables, or beef, be sure to keep an eye out for the Buy Madison County logo. When you see a product with this logo, you’ll know that it was grown, produced, and raised with pride right here in Madison County.
